Overview

Heterogeneous catalysts can be coated with thin films of ionic liquid, thereby rendering the catalytic performance of such materials. While the thin coating usually lowers the activity, it can boost the selectivity and stability of these solid catalysts with ionic liquid layer (SCILL) significantly. In particular, the selectivity of hydrogenation reactions has been improved drastically by the use of SCILL materials, exemplified both by academic as well as industrial studies.
